Solomons

A Tribute to the Oyster Tonger, A Chesapeake Waterman, by Antonio Tobias Mendez, at the Annmarie Scuptlure Garden & Art Center

When we visit family in Maryland, we like to spend time in Solomons. The island and surrounding land has a long and interesting maritime history. We like to visit for the Calvert Marine Museum, Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center, the waterfront restaurants, and the general vibe of the place.

One Saturday while we were there was the annual Solomons Dragon Boat Festival, put on by Southern Maryland Community Resources. Teams from all around compete in, well, dragon boat races along the waterfront. We spent about an hour or so in the morning watching them. The weather was a little cloudy/ thinking about rain, but the vibe was really fun. After we got our fill watching the races, we made our annual trip to Annmarie Garden. Due to weather, we only spent time with the inside art exhibits, but it was a great visit none-the-less.

On a different day, we visited Calvert Marine Museum. Always a fun time, it’s a mix of history exhibits, aquarium, a nature walk, and otters. Unfortunately, the otters were sleeping while we were there, so we missed one of our favorite parts.

While we were looking at some early ship displays, they announced they were letting visitors go out on paddle boats or row boats. We took advantage and rowed us around the museum’s little harbor area. Only the center row locks were working, so I sat backward and rowed while LeeAnn navigated. After the museum, we had lunch at The Pier. It was good.
