Windy Day on Lake Superior

Lake Superior waves crash at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Michigan.

I’m outside in the dark at 6:58 on the first morning of our stay at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.  I thought I would read a little (with a red flashlight if you’re wondering), but that only lasted a few minutes. I got inspired to write an early post to talk about the weather. It’s windy! My weather app says in a “nearby” town the real temp is 54°F with a wind chill of 38.

I’m sitting at our picnic table, and I don’t know about the 38, but it’s windy. I can hear waves crashing on the shore of Lake Superior, and one of the small aluminum tables fell over with a hollow metallic clank. The other one fell victim to the wind overnight. It rained last night, but I don’t know how much because our rain gauge blew over. Right now, the wind is shaking my laptop screen back and forth. I finally decided to come in when the wind blew my book off the table and turned my laptop 90 degrees.

Later I went out to film the lake. It’s angry. The wind was blowing hard enough that I had to keep my hands near my camera while filming to make sure the wind didn’t blow it over for an expensive oops. As I’m writing this, the temp is now showing a real temp of 51°F and a wind chill of 31. That sounds extreme to me, but it’s certainly cold in the wind.

All this said, so far, it’s been a good stay and I’m happy to be right on the Lake. This is the closest we’ve stayed to Lake Superior. At a different park, we were about a half mile walk to the lake, here its probably not even a tenth of a mile to it.
