East Harbor State Park

Sunrise over Lake Erie from near the boat ramps at East Harbor State Park

We spent a few days at East Harbor State Park on the shore of Lake Erie. The park sits on a peninsula north of Sandusky, Ohio. This is a very large camping park; they boast 585 sites. We didn’t count them, but that sure seems possible. We probably spent two hours during our stay simply driving around the loops looking at all the sites (and possibly the campers). What also stands out are nice tent sites and lots of campers bring their boats.

The first day morning we were there, we took a drive around the peninsula, visiting the Marblehead Lighthouse along the way, which is its own state park. The lighthouse itself is, according to signage, the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes. Lots of people were there visiting, but the visitors center/ store appear to be closed after Labor Day except for special events.

We drove though the town of Marblehead, which looked like a nice place to spend an afternoon with boutiques and eateries, but we didn’t make it back after our drive. The rest of our time there was spent walking Barnie, hanging out at the camper, reading, talking with our neighbors, and painting. It was a good stop.

LeeAnn and Barnie hang out at our campsite.
