First Hike of the Trip

The trail at St. Mary’s Lake in Southern Maryland is mostly wooded, but occasionally crosses open fields.

This morning, Barnie and I went on our first hike of this trip. The trail we took is a nice loop around St. Mary’s Lake, near where we’re staying. There’s not much to say about the hike itself, but it was a nice hike simply for being out in the woods, even if was close enough to the highway to hear the louder trucks. We only did about 3 2/3 miles, but it was great to be out there.

On top of simply being out there, the temperature was fantastic. I’m not sure it was anything special for the locals, but for Barnie and me, it was amazing. It was in the upper 60’s when we headed out about quarter after seven, and was only 75 when we got back around nine. The last walk we took at home before our trip, we left the house before 6am and it was about 82°F, so this was a wonderful change of pace. I can’t wait for even cooler temperatures up north.

Barnie waits for us to continue walking after I take this picture of the trail.

This photo was taken from a spur off the main trail.

Barnie rests in the shade after our hike.
