La Michoacana

Thursday, we ate lunch at a place proclaiming “Mexican Street Food” and “Home Made Ice Cream” called La Michoacana. I noticed it yesterday on Apple Maps while looking at the nearby town on Deming. The Yelp review photos looked promising, so we checked it out. As a bonus, we would have stumbled across it naturally as we took Barnie to a dog park. Barnie give the dog park high marks.

Even though we’re very close to Mexico, I wasn’t quite prepared for how authentically Mexican it would be. We walked in and a Latina lady came to the counter and said, “Buenos Dias.” I sort of mumbled “Hi” as I looked at the menu on a chalkboard above her. I still wasn’t really thinking about anything but my order and if LeeAnn was ready when I said something along the lines of “I’d like three barbacoa tacos…” I couldn’t get the rest out before she said, “No hablo inglés” and quickly walked to the back asking who could speak English. As that was happening, I stood there calling to her “señora, señora.” I wanted to tell her I could order in Spanish, but by the time I said that, she was already to the kitchen and likely couldn’t hear me. An English speaker came out at took our order.

The barbacoa tacos, $1.50 each.

The tacos were really good. I have some Spanish, but my pronunciation is bad. That’s probably why I reflexively ordered in English, that, and I’m an English speaker. As we were eating, several people, all Spanish speakers, came in. I listened to her take their orders and the questions she asked. I totally could have ordered in Spanish. I might have even got the same order I received speaking in English. I wish I had tried it in Spanish, but it was still a fun, interesting experience.

Let me end by restating how good the food was. Also, we beat a rush. After we ate, LeeAnn wanted ice cream, but the line was out to the door, so we skipped it.
